'Queer Brown Stories' Launching This Thursday

Connecting Camley Street Installation 4

We are delighted to launch our next Connecting Camley Street artwork installation - Queer Brown Stories with the incredible Dhaga collective.

Queer Brown Stories is an opportunity for Queer & Trans South Asian folx who live/work in Camden to be part of a collaborative mural for the Camley Street underpass. The outputs of both workshops will inspire and inform the artwork on the Camley Street underpass, celebrating Queer Brown Stories of Camden.

The Connecting Camley Street artwork programme is an initiative run by Camden Council that aims for local people to have a genuine voice over the future of Camley Street. Camley Street is changing and will become a highly sustainable new neighbourhood including genuinely affordable homes, improved business space and job opportunities, underpinned by a bold vision for meaningful and imaginative placemaking. A series of artworks by different local communities will be hosted in this underpass gallery space over the coming years.

Participants are invited to take part in a Freewriting and Collage workshop alongside a film screening of ‘Discovering Kali’ celebrating the legendary Club Kali hosted by the Naz and Matt Foundation. The film screening is open to wider audiences beyond Camden as well and there will be delicious food by the HENNA Asian Women’s Group with the Bengali Women’s Forum. HENNA Asian Women’s Group will also be available throughout the day providing support on voter registration.

Both events are now live on Eventbrite!

Online Freewriting workshop, ‘Space, Place & Belonging’

Thursday 19th Oct, 6-8pm.

Collage Workshop & Film Screening, ‘Taking Up Space in the City’

Saturday 28th Oct, 12 – 4pm, Old Diorama Arts Centre NW1 3FE.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

The vision for Camley Street

Camley Street is changing into a highly sustainable new neighbourhood including genuinely affordable homes, improved business space and job opportunities, underpinned by a bold vision for meaningful and imaginative placemaking.

Over the past few years, we have worked hard to create a vision for Camley Street that represents local people; with regular meetings of the Camley Street Steering Group, workshops with local young people, drop-in consultation events around the area, the Connecting Camley Street gallery space in the underpass, and of course the Camley Street Festival.

We are currently searching for a developer partner to help us bring forward this development, and we are looking for a team that values the input of the community as much as we do. Come and talk to us to find out more.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

What’s important to you on Camley Street (N1C)? Talk to us more!

Dear community members,

Thank you for the time you’ve already spent learning about the upcoming plans for Camley Street!

Now, we’re asking you to tell us more about what matters to you and the local people you know.

The plans for Camley Street so far

Our vision for a future Camley Street has already been led by the priorities of Camden residents, including affordable housing, jobs for local people, protecting the environment and safe public spaces for the community.

Here’s a reminder: https://camleystreet.commonplace.is/.

What’s particularly important to you? Tell us through a call, a coffee chat or drop-in

We want to hear from you more.

For example, how might you, your neighbours, friends and family be affected by affordable homes, local jobs, green neighbourhoods or safe free public spaces on Camley Street? Who and what would you like us to keep in mind with our designs?

We welcome all thoughts and perspectives on the masterplan. You do not need any special knowledge to talk to us about what you’d like to see.

Email, call or text us to arrange: camleystreet@camden.gov.uk / 07880 055 226

If you are happy to talk to us more, please let us know when you might be available for a call or a free coffee with us (either Zohra, Rozita or Louise) in the next couple of weeks.

Or tell us if you’d like to come to our informal drop-in on Thursday 11 August between 5.30 - 7pm at Camden Council, 5 Pancras Square, N1C 4AG. We’ll provide tea, coffee and snacks!

Get in touch to find out more and arrange: camleystreet@camden.gov.uk or 07880 055 226. You can just send us your thoughts, if you’d prefer.

Thanks again for the time and interest you’ve already given to Camley Street!

Invitation to the Camley Street Festival on Sunday 26th June

Come along to the Camley Street Festival this Sunday 26th June, 11-4pm.

Join us for a fun-packed day with fantastic performances by local musicians, complimentary food for local residents and the grand opening of our new art installation ‘Connecting Camley Street’, designed and created by young people from our community and local artists, Rochester Square. For the full programme, please see the leaflet attached.

Deputy Mayor Nazma Rahman, who has a strong passion for supporting young people and always champions for underrepresented voices to be heard, will officially open the artwork at 1pm.

We’ll be sharing our plans for the redevelopment of Camley Street, and as always we want to hear from you! There will be the opportunity to review our ideas as well as share yours on the future of your neighbourhood.

The Camley Street Festival is part of a wider network of satellite events on a trail for the London Festival of Architecture (LFA) - the world’s largest annual architecture festival. This year’s theme - determined by a public competition - is ‘act’; we hope you enjoy 'Connecting Camley Street' celebrating Camden’s strengths and diversity now and moving into the future.

How to get there

Camley Street Underpass, Near 120 Camley Street, N1C 4PG.

Camley Street is located in the heart of Camden, just north of King's Cross. The underpass for the Connecting Camley Street installation is at the northern end of the street as you drop down from Agar Grove - but if you're coming from the south, you can also walk up past the Camley Street Natural Park and follow the road up.
